The results of a two-year Small Business Innovation Research program to assess the US Air Force radiographic inspection environment and evaluate candidate digital X-ray imaging systems for use in this environment have resulted in several recommendations for the use of these emerging technologies. Visits to representative Air Force bases were made to review the radiographic practice and culture at operational, training and Air Logistic Center locations. Particular attention was given to bases with F-15 squadrons, since this aircraft accounts for a large fraction of the radiographic NDI conducted in the Air Force. Operational units of F-16, T-38, B-1B, C-130, and C-141 aircraft were also visited to gain a wider view of the X-ray inspection applications. Digital X-ray imaging systems have been evaluated relative to required performance characteristics, adaptability to the Air Force inspection environment and cost of acquisition and use. Several categories of X-ray imaging systems were evaluated. These include flat panel arrays, storage phosphors, screen camera systems, and image intensifier tubes.
