Landslide Risk Assessment in Banaue Rice Terraces, Philippines

Landslide is the most destructive phenomenon that causes the rapid deterioration of the Banaue Rice Terraces. One of the major factors that increase the risk of landslide occurrence in the terraces is the deforestation in the watershed above them. Analysis of Aerial photographs and satellite images for the past 50 years show an accelerated deforestation in the watershed. The frequency of landslide occurrence also increases in the area in the last decade. These developments show the increased risk of a major deterioration of the terraces due to landslide in the next few years. The formulation of mathematical models using artificial neural networks and the development of an automated system to produce a landslide risk map of the study area are still ongoing.
