On the Effectiveness of Ship Maneuvering Simulator Training onboard a Training Ship

This paper describes the results of an experiment conducted on a training ship that aimed at assessing the effectiveness of an onboard training method utilizing an onboard Ship Maneuvering Simulator (SMS). In the experiment, cadets were divided into groups A and B, and performed two anchoring practice sessions, once handling an actual ship, and once using the onboard SMS with a scenario replicating the actual practice. The group A cadets went through the SMS training first and then the real training, and the opposite was the case for group B. Ship handling skills of the cadets were scored by instructors. Suitable training items were determined for each training scheme, by comparing the ship handling skills of group A with those of group B. Based on the results of this classification of training items, the authors propose an optimal combination of onboard SMS training with real training on a training ship.
