This paper describes how fault tolerance has been addressed in thendesign of the Attitude and Articulation Control Subsystem for thenSaturn-bound Cassini spacecraft. Cassini's fault tolerance objectivesnhave strongly influenced the subsystem's level of autonomy, and havenmotivated some significant improvements over the autonomous capabilitiesnof previous interplanetary spacecraft. Autonomous fault tolerantnbehaviors have been embedded at several points in the object-orientednflight control software, including a dedicated set of failure detection,nisolation, and recovery algorithms
