Shortage of oil resource, legislative factors and global urbanization will significantly drive the electrification of automotive power trains within the next few years. One significant component of hybrid- and electric vehicles is the battery. Only Li-Ion technology provides the necessary power and energy densities, which are needed for an enduring success of power train electrification. The behavior of batteries is mainly influenced by ageing mechanism and production tolerances. This paper shows how electronics can significantly improve lifetime and performance of such battery systems.
