Recognition of the need for structural components that are able to withstand •extreme impulse loads has increased with the increase in global threats. The World Trade Center and the Pentagon attacks on September 11, 2001, among the many other terrorist attacks and attempts, have promoted research in the field of structural response to impulse loads. The study of structures subjected to short duration dynamic loads has existed for decades; however, a shift in the type of risks structures face has occurred due to the more localized manner of current threats.
