Brassica rapa L. cv. 'Astroplants' were grown on thernInternational Space Station during April – June 2002 inrnthe Biomass Production System. Plants were manuallyrnpollinated and were maturing seeds when they werernharvested for preservation in flight by fixation orrnfreezing. Overall growth and development wererncomparable between flight and ground control plants.rnChlorophyll and carbohydrate content of the leaves werernthe same in the two treatments. Although comparablernnumbers of seeds were produced inside the seed pods, therndeveloping seeds from the spaceflight treatment had onlyrnhalf of the dry weight of the ground controls and hadrnaltered storage components. Glucosinolate content of thernstem tissue was also determined. The concentration of 3-rnbutenyl-glucosinolate was on average 75% greater in thernspaceflight samples than in the ground control. Thernresults demonstrate how the spaceflight environmentrninfluences nutritional and flavor characteristics of arnpotential crop for use in a Biological Life SupportrnSystem.
