Automatic Color Restoration of Faded Pictures and Motion Pictures

The dye fading phenomenon is a major threat to millions of cinematographic and photographic works. A bleached image is characterized by drab colors and a strong color cast. Bleaching is a chemically irreversible process, hence the necessity of digital restoration. In this paper, we present a survey of recent digital film restoration techniques. These digital techniques aim to remove the color cast and to revive the colors of the damaged images by balancing the colors and enhancing the image with no a priori knowledge.
