Control of Phosphate Processing Using an Integrated System of Computational Intelligence Techniques

As the industrial systems we attempt to model, design, and control become increasingly complex, it is becoming apparent that researchers and engineers will need to combine various computational techniques to achieve the performance they require. Over the previous decade, many researchers have begun to combine techniques from the field of computational intelligence (CI) to form comprehensive adaptive computer systems capable of achieving levels of performance comparable to, or even in excess of that achievable by humans. This paper describes an adaptive process control system that incorporates three different techniques from the field of CI: (1) neural networks, (2) fuzzy logic, and (3) genetic algorithms. The effectiveness of the system is demonstrated via its application to the control of a phosphate processing plant.
