The purpose of this study is to construct an IT-based system that enables and supports next-generation workers inherit proficient skills from aged, experienced practitioners. In this study, we consider about what makes a human-to-human apprenticeship skill transfer successful, and based upon this we design such an IT-based apprenticeship system mediated by an interactive agent. In apprenticeship, masters never intentionally nor explicitly teach their skill to their apprentice, which apprentices have to actively make efforts to discover and to give the meaning from their own perspectives in observing expert's demonstrating skills. Therefore, our aent does not force apprentices to learn the skills as they are specified by the agent, but only facilitates them to self-structure their skills in their own way. In this study, we let two subjects (a skilled worker and an novice apprentice) try to inspect some target objects by interacting with the agent. Copyright direct C 2000 IFAC
