The Canadian Corrosion Code of 1978 required automotive outer body panels to be perforation free for 5 years and structural components for 6 years. Now, statistical information from 1980 to 1995 shows that vehicles in use over 9 years in service have shown a 41.89% average increase. Improved design and materials have been responsible for this change. This paper reviews some of the materials used to provide new solutions to specific problems. They are discussed in case form - corrosion protection for large diameter fuel filler tubing, material corrosion comparisons of various body materials, corrosion prevention measures to minimize gravel road abrasion, corrosion control of aluminum structure, and the recent application of aluminizing to prevent pitting corrosion of chromium ferritic stainless steel. Lastly, the paper describes a process used to improve the corrosion resistance of small diameter fuel and brake lines.
