Diamond pressing on soft and heat-treated alloy steel surfaces

In this paper the effect of certain diamond pressing process (DPP) on the state of soft (un heat treated) and heat treated alloy steel surfaces was studied and the results of the experiments are presented. For soft alloy steel surfaces that have been processed by diamond pressing the improvements were of the following percentages relative to the ground surfaces: 38%, 51%, 80%, and 65% for D2, O1, H13, and 3115 soft alloy steel surfaces, respectively. Also, it has been shown that both the average surface roughness (Ra) and maximum surface roughness (Rmax) are adversely affected by diamond pressing relative to the received surface quality (Ra) and (Rmax) for the same surfaces that have been processed by grinding. Improvements on microhardness of the heat treated alloy steel surfaces that have been processed by diamond pressing were up to the following percentages: 28%, 18%, 30%, and 19% for D2, O1, H13, and 3115 hardened alloy steel surfaces, respectively. Also, it has been shown that there is an improvement on (Ra) and (Rmax) of the O1 and 3115 heat treated alloy steel surfaces. In this paper micrographs of the processed surfaces of soft and heat treated alloy steels have been given. It has been shown that the depth of plastic deformed surface nearly about 250μm and 200μm, respectively.
