The consolidation process of WC-20%Co and WC-20%Co-10%diamond powders and obtaining rigid coatings on cylindrical steel surfaces by a hot explosive consolidation technology are described. The consolidation temperature was varied from 20 to 1,200℃ and the loading intensity of was under 10 GPa. The investigation showed that the application of high temperatures to the powders in two stages enabled to consolidate them to near theoretical density and a coating was obtained upon the entire length of the cylindrical steel substrate. The density and hardness of consolidated coatings depended on the temperature and loading intensity.
