Lapping, a traditional surface finishing process, is commonly used by many manufacturers for producing fine-surface finishes. Processing kinematics of lapping significantly influences lapping efficiency and workpiece quality as well as the lap wear profile. Relative velocity and mean path velocity equations are provided to show their influence on the rotational speed ratio and the position factor on the material removal rate (MRR). Characteristic lap wear profiles can be predicted by inspecting the track density distribution. The rotational speed ratio dominates the track distribution and is sensitive to the lap wear profile. Model predictions are compared with experimental results for polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutter lapping performed on a single-sided lapping machine.
