In sandwich plates composed of CFRP face and Al honeycomb core, the "Dimple", thermal buckling coincident with the periodic pattern of the core, can often occur in the CFRP face because of the difference of their thermal expansion coefficients. This phenomenon is known to largely reduce the in-pane stiffness by some experiments. The finite element method has been developed based on the homogenization method. Adopting the approximate square core model of honeycomb sandwich plate, a qualitative evaluation are carried out for the reduction of stiffness. And the analyses indicate that even a shallow Dimple should largely reduce the in-plane stiffness and the buckling load of sandwich plates. The effect of the dimple configuration and core model are evaluated also, and it is indicated that our analyses could explain the behavior of such sandwich plates qualitatively with enough accuracy.
