Strategies for Supporting the 'Human Processes' in Team-based Instructional Development Projects

Completing large instructional development projects, especially those involving new technologies and teaching methods, often requires a team with members of wide-ranging expertise and backgrounds - teacher, subject matter expert, instructional technologist, web designer, production manager, network administrator, assessment expert, etc. The complexity of such a diverse group of people effectively working together to complete the project demands that they employ an organized, systematic instructional development process. In this document, I describe a team-based instructional development process in which a typical project spans several months and whose goal is to produce two outcomes: (1) design and construction of specifically targeted teaching methods and tools and (2) knowledge generation among team participants. Coaching the team members toward those outcomes requires a third element that I label as "human processes" (Figure 1). I will present a set of core principles and working guidelines that an instructional consultant serving as project facilitator can follow to support those human aspects of a working with the team.
