The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water (OGWDW) collects national occurrence data on drinking water contaminants using Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Regulations (UCMRs). These contaminants may be selected from the Drinking Water Contaminant Candidate List (CCL), or may be contaminants of emerging concern with the potential for inclusion on future CCLs. In order for contaminants to be included in a future UCMR, standardized analytical methods for their measurement in drinking water must be available. A group of 12 chemicals are being evaluated for inclusion in two drinking water methods utilizing on-line and off-line solid phase extraction (SPE), to isolate and concentrate the method analytes, and liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) to identify and quantitate the analytes. Preliminary data were obtained for the 12 chemicals using both on-line and off-line SPE-LC/MS/MS techniques.
