Teachers' development has been an increasingly important academic query with wide discussion among Chinese academia in the latest 10 years. In this article the issues facing second language writing teachers are reviewed. After viewing major development in our understanding of the writing process over recent decades, we examine current pedagogical options and the implications they have for teachers and curriculum designers. We explore approaches to professional development for second language writing teachers and thereafter we outline constructive suggestions for teachers to improve their practice in the writing classroom, and enhance the performance of their student writers.
