Andrew is well known internationally for his contributions in many subjects including soil mechanics, ice mechanics, solid mechanics, and pipeline engineering. All his work and contributions are exemplified by elegance and simplicity. Andrew has managed to develop stunningly beautiful solutions to many problems that looked intractable to engineers and scientist before him. He influenced and guided current research in many areas by establishing a rigorous and elegant framework. He made many problems accessible to other researchers by breaking them down into tractable and simple elements. Andrew was instrumental in the development of many practical solutions that have changed both the construction and the design of offshore pipelines in the last 30 years. These include pipe laying, trenching and burial, on-bottom stability, thermal expansion, upheaval buckle, bottom roughness, subsea systems, and design for ice scour, bundles and pipe-in-pipe systems.
