ABEL~(~R) peroxynitrite assay was able to monitor the loss of antioxidants in plasma artificially oxidized with peroxyl radicals released from AAPH. The appearance of a pro-oxidant, possibly a product of lipid peroxidation, was observed earlier from donor 2 and only when all the antioxidants in the sample had been consumed. However, the pro-oxidant may have formed earlier but was masked by antioxidants still present in the sample. That Pholasin~(~R) does not react with either AAPH or peroxyl radicals further supports the observation that the pro-oxidant was related to peroxyl radical attack of a plasma component. As a higher antioxidant capacity, (donor 2), protects the plasma longer against lipid peroxidation, then enhancement of blood with antioxidants, during surgery, renal dialysis, and extracorporeal circulation, could protect against reperfusion injury and/or complications of oxidative stress arising from oxidation of plasma constituents.
