Carbon electrochemistry attracts intensive interests especially in catalysis and energy storage (such as supercapacitor and lithium ion battery ).Energy storage in carbon supercapacitors involves charge uptake in the carbon/electrolyte interfacial region and primarily depends on the electrochemical reactivity of the carbon surfaces.Carbon supercapacitors extensively utilize redox reactions in addition to electric double layer to increase electrochemical surface reactivity.The most efficient way to introduceredox reactions in carbon materials is functionalization.Redox reactions involving functional groups are determined by their diverse local chemical-electronic properties in carbon materials. Numerous works have been devoted to reveal the mechanism of redox reactions mediated by oxygen groups of phenol and quinone/hydroquinone.
