Method for automatically actuating a friction clutch in a powertrain of a motor vehicle by means of a hydrostatic system having a pressure chamber formed between them by an electrically driven transducer cylinder of a hydrostatic coupling actuator, a receiver cylinder actuating the friction clutch and a pressure chamber formed between them, wherein a sniffing operation is initiated by shifting the transducer cylinder in an unattended state of the friction clutch by connecting the pressure volume to a pressureless reservoir and providing pressure compensation, characterized in this respect,that a sniffing operation is carried out depending on a multi-stage, continuously formed from several operating variables of the motor vehicle, a measure of confidence for safe operation of the friction clutch forming scale, wherein a lowest value of the scale represents no sniffing need and a uppermost value of the scale represents an immediate sniffing need.
