The art of the present invention relates generally to robot safety, and in particular to systems and methods for characterizing robot movements to ensure safe robot movements in industry and other environments. Embodiments of the invention provide automated robot system identification and stop time and distance estimation, significantly improving existing ad hoc methods of robot system identification. The systems and methods described herein can be used by end users, system integrators, and robot manufacturers to estimate robot dynamic parameters for each application.
