The present invention provides a process for the treatment of gasoline comprising sulfur-containing compounds and olefins, the process comprising at least the following steps: a) hydrodesulfurization of gasoline comprising passing gasoline mixed with hydrogen over at least one hydrodesulphurization catalyst to produce a reduced sulfur eluate; b) separating the partially desulfurized gasoline from the H 2 S produced in step a) as well as the hydrogen introduced in excess; c) a catalyst step for sweetening the desulfurized gasoline obtained from step b), converting the residual mercaptan to thioethers via addition reaction with olefins.
