To provide novel pipecolinic acid position-4 hydroxylases, and novel methods for simply and inexpensively producing 4-hydroxyamino acids, in particular, optically active 4-hydroxyamino acids.SOLUTION: Disclosed is a method for producing a 4-hydroxyamino acid comprising treating an α-amino acid with a pipecolinic acid position-4 hydroxylase protein, and/or a cell containing the pipecolinic acid position-4 hydroxylase protein, or a cell preparation or cell culture containing the hydroxylase protein, where the pipecolinic acid position-4 hydroxylase protein has an activity to produce trans-4-hydroxy-L-pipecolinic acid from L-pipecolinic acid in the presence of 2-oxoglutaric acid and a bivalent iron ion.SELECTED DRAWING: None
