A method for a terminal to provide a user interface screen of an instant messaging application, the method comprising: displaying a user interface screen including a text input window and an emoticon button for opening an emoticon display window; checking the presence or absence of a recommended emoticon; displaying the emoticon button as a hint icon different from the default icon when there is a recommended emoticon associated with the input text; and when the hint icon is selected, an emoticon recommendation result related to the input text and displaying on the emoticon display window.
