To provide methods for preventing or treating infectious diseases caused by extracellular microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi.SOLUTION: Provided is a method for preventing and/or treating infectious diseases caused by extracellular microorganisms by systemically administering an effective amount of a gallium compound to a subject. As microorganisms of interest, Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VRE), Escherichia coli O-157:II7, and fluoroquinolone-resistant Salmonella typhi are included. In addition, the gallium compound can be administered in combination with one or more conventional antimicrobial agents for the treatment of infectious diseases at a low risk of developing multi-drug resistant pathogens.EFFECT: The method can also be applied to the eradication of Helicobacter pylori and the like causing ulcers which have been difficult to achieve until now.SELECTED DRAWING: None
