Provided is a feed ingredient having at least 20% by weight Clostridiumtyrobutyricum, which C. tyrobutyricum may have at least 70% of dry weight crude protein and optionally at least 7% of dry weight lysine and/or at least 1% of dry weight methionine. The feed ingredient may further contain acetogenic bacteria. The C. tyrobutyricum may be genetically modified or adaptively evolved. Methods of producing and using such a feed ingredient are also provided, as are probiotic preparations comprising such a feed ingredient.
