23,734. Bouillet, J. Nov. 28. Arc lamps.-In a motor lamp, horizontal carbons y, z are carried by two pairs of side rollers f, and two lower r rollers d. One roller of each pair is carried by a spring on the baseplate b of the lamp, to hold the carbon against the other roller f, which is carried by a vertical shaft h, geared to a ratchetwheel r. This is intermittently turned, to feed the carbons together, by a pawl on a lever r p, pivoted centrally, and acted on at one end by a spring q, and at the pawl end by a core and shunt s o l enoid m ; the shunt circuit is completed through a pivoted switch v, which rests on the pawl lever p, so that, when the pawl lever has turned to some extent, an adjusting- screw on the switch is stopped by the top-plate a of the lamp, the shunt circuit is broken, and the core and pawl lever are returned to their original position by the spring q. The rollers f may be of different sizes, to keep the arc central when using continuous current. One lower roller d is carried by a fixed support ; the other is connected by a link and a lever l to the armature of a series magnet j, which strikes the arc by tilting the carbon y. In a modification, the carbons are carried above the frame a, b, which is supported in an inverted reflector. Heating by electricity.-The inverted lamp may be arranged in a casing, the top of which is a corrugated metal plate to support utensils to be heated, over the arc. The plate is supported by a refractory ring. Several lamps may be used in one apparatus.
