10,157. Hardwick, H June 1. Yarns, warping and beaming; looms, warp tension regulating in.-Relates to means for controlling the register of parti-coloured warp threads in textile machinery, such as warping-machines, or looms. Fig. 1 represents a loom with controlling-apparatus. The parti-coloured warp threads x, for forming the pattern, pass from a beam 3, beneath a guide-bar 7, then through eyes formed in verticallymovable rods 8, and beneath a second guide-bar 9. When the warp threads are fine, an additional guide-bar 9a and set of rods 8 may be employed, some of the threads being passed through eyes in one set of rods 8, and the remainder through the eyes of the second set. Each rod 8 is connected to a pin 15 by means of a cord, chain, wire, or the like 10, which passes over guide-bars 12, 13 and through reeds 11 and 14 ; the pins 15 are inserted in apertures formed in a board 16, and can be adjusted by the attendant for the purpose of controlling the register of the threads in the fabric. The guide-bars are formed, wholly or in part, of glass or other material. The threads x may be deflected downwardly, instead of upwardly, if desired. Various other means may be employed for adjustably connecting the ends of the wires &c. 10 to the board 16. According to another method of controlling the register, each warp thread passes between two rollers, one of which is adjustable to allow the tension of the thread to be varied. The reed spaces and the corresponding vertical rows of holes in the board 16 may be similarly numbered. If desired, the rods 8 may be dispensed with, the warp threads being passed through eyes attached to the wire 10. In some cases, as when weaving pile fabrics, it may be necessary to act upon all the warp threads, and this may be done by adjusting the position of the bar 7 by means of a worm-wheel 32 mounted on a shaft 31, which carries arms 30 supporting the bar 7, or by adjusting the board 16 by means of a nut 36, and screw 35. Fig. 12 represents a register-controlling apparatus applied to a warp-beaming machine. The threads pass between tension-rollers 49, 54, over antifriction rollers 52 carried by a series of vertically-movable bars 51, and are directed by rollers 48, 47 to antifriction rollers carried by a second set of bars 50, whence the threads are directed by rollers 46, 65, 45, 44, 55, and 43 to the beam 42. The bars 50, 51 have teeth engaging with the teeth 56, 57 of anchor escapements 58, which are actuated by means of cords &c. 60 and key levers 61. The movements of the bars 50 serve to tighten the threads, while those of the bars 51 loosen them. The threads above the roller 44 are preferably arranged so as to form straight lines of colour across the series, serving as a guide to the attendant ; an index bar, marked or numbered to correspond with the threads, is also preferably arranged in front of the threads. In a modified form of controlling-apparatus, each thread passes round a friction drum mounted loosely upon a shaft, and held in position by means of a spring finger. Each drum may be actuated by means of spring-controlled keys which engage with pins on the drum. A disc may be mounted upon the drum for pressing upon the thread.
