23,226. Leach, A. Nov. 9, 1909. Warps, balling.-In a warp-balling machine in which the ball is rotated by contact with a winding-drum, the ball is wound on a beam &c. 32, which is supported by arms 36 pivoted upon adjustable blocks 39 so arranged that, as the winding proceeds, the arms 36 turn and automatically regulate the pressure of the ball upon the winding-drum 31. The yarns are guided to the ball by one or more guides 41, each of which comprises a part 42 having fixed inclined portions 43 connected by a curved face 44 and a part 42a consisting of a vertically-adjustable straight bar 45a and a bar 45 having a depression 83 in its upper edge. The guide 41 is reciprocated on guide-bars 47, 48 by a chain &c. 49, which is driven from the beam 32 by means of mangle-wheel or other mechanism. arranged to reverse automatically the direction of movement of the guides when they have reached either end of their stroke. The machine may be provided with change - wheel mechanism for varying the extent of movement of the guide 41 and the frequency of its reversal: Means may be provided to change the speed of the drum 31 relatively to that of the rollers that deliver the yarns to the machine. The beam flanges 33 may be omitted, in which case the yarns may be led to the lower part of the ball instead of to the upper part. An additional yarn-guide, consisting of an adjustable rounded bar beneath which the yarns pass, may be employed.
