16,380. Thompson, W. P., [Vereinigte Maschinenfabrik Augsburg & Maschinenbauaktiengesellschaft N³rnberg, A. G.]. Sept. 14. Weirs.-Relates to a weir which can be easily opened against the action of alluvium, ice, or similar material, a sectional elevation being shown in Fig. 1. Extending completely across the top of the weirwall is a beam d, on which rests a roller a, constructed of strong iron plates or the like, of radius about equal to the height of the normal water level b above the beam d. The ends of the roller rest in quadrants q, and apertures in the end-faces allow water to pass in or out of the roller. Towards each end of the roller a chain-wheel i is mounted and is rotated from a motor t, by means of the chain k passing round the wheels i, l, m and having its ends fixed in the ground. Rotation of the wheel i effects an engagement between a toothed ring on the roller and an inclined rack e and so raises the roller to the dotted position a1. In a modification, the rack is horizontal.
