' Pluten presses : stopping and starting apparatus. -Relates to safety guards or protectors for platen printing, embossing, stamping, cutting-out, and like presses. On the driving-shaft 5 of the machine is a loose flywheel 3 driven by a band and having a flange 3a formed conical internally. Rotating with and sliding on the shaft 5 is a sleeve connected by toggle-arms 8 with clutch blocks 7, which engage with, or are disengaged from, the flange 3a according to the position of the sleeve. The sleeve is moved by a starting and stopping lever 6, pivoted at 11, and when the sleeve is in the stopping position it engages a brake flange 10 fixed on the framing 1. Above the platen 2 is the cross-bar 23 of a lever frame 22 pivoted at 14, and extending from the frame 22 is an arm 15 the end of which normally engages a spring bolt in the framing, holding it in its retracted position. Opposite this spring bolt is an arm 20 of the starting-lever 6, and when the frame 22 is moved by the operator's hand remaining too long on the platen face, the spring bolt is released and operates the arm 20 and lever 6 to stop the machine at once. The bolt is re-set on operating the lever 6 to start the machine. The lever frame 22 may be arranged near any dangerous part of the machine.
