5799. Augezd, Baron A. O. von. March 12. Machine guns.-Relates to devices for locking the breech-bolt in closed position, and consists in employing the hammer to operate the locking- device. Fig. 1 shows in side elevation the breechbolt 1 and locking-plate 3, Fig. 3 the hammer 2 and locking-plate, Fig. 4 the breech-bolt, locking- plate, and hammer combined, and Fig. 5a three views of the locking-plate. The plate 3 is hinged at its front end to the breech-bolt 1, while its rear end moves vertically in the slots 4. When the gun is discharged, the forward movement of the hammer 2 causes the surface S to depress the plate 3 into engagement with the breech-casing at 6, and the backward movement of the hammer, following the discharge, causes the surface T to raise the plate and release the breech-bolt. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the locking-plate is replaced by a round bar 3, which travels in the slots 4 in the breech-bolt, and is depressed into engagement with the breech-casing by the slot 5 in the hammer.
