Starting.-Tandem or other compound engines are provided with a valve f, which admits steam from the high-pressure chest a to the exhaust pipe c leading to the low-pressure chest b. The valve is' opened when the starting-lever e is raised to the position 3, beyond the position 2 for normal working, and the end of the valve-spindle d engages the lever h. The invention is shown applied to a traction engine.
