8039. Turner, J. R., and Stimpson, M. April 7. Damping and affixing labels, stamps, and the like.- Relates to apparatus for damping and affixing postage stamps &c., applicable also for gumming patterns of fabrics &c. on to cards or in books. A sheet of postage stamps &c. is fed over a guide 31, and a strip is severed by a pair of rotary cutters 26, 27 rotated by gearing and a crank-handle 30. The strip is wound on a drum driven by a band 33. When ready for use, the strip is passed under a guide g and between a feed-roller h and a grooved roller i pressed upwards and carried by a blade spring j. The roller i may be depressed by a pushpiece 25 when adjusting the strip to begin with. The roller h is rotated step by step by a ratchetwheel u and pawl v, actuated, from the hand-lever r, by a connecting-rod 2 in two parts connected by a spring 3 ; when the pawl strikes the stop 4, the spring 3 yields and allows the lever r to continue its motion. A stamp is severed by a fixed blade p and a guillotine blade l operated by a connecting- rod 5. The stamp is fed through the guide g2 and seized by grippers 8 and drawn beneath pressing fingers 6 over a damping-roller 7 until it comes beneath a presser 18. The grippers are operated by the lever r through the slotted lever 12. As the grippers move to the right, the cross-piece 11 comes under the spring 8a, which keeps the top jaw closed until the pin rides up inclines 9, which positively cause the jaws to release the stamp. On the return motion, the pin rides over the spring 8a. The presser 18 is connected by a pin and slot to the hand-lever r. The spring plunger 23 holds the stamp in place, while the presser 18 descends on to the stamp. The letter, postcard, &c. is placed in the space 35. All the parts are actuated by one depression of the lever r. In a modified form, shown in Fig. 3, the stamps are held by spring flaps 40 on radial partitions arranged between two discs 38, one of which has ratchet teeth engaged by a spring pawl 45 carried on a lever 47 rocked by the connecting-rod 2. When used for cutting and sticking patterns of textiles in books &c., the feed-roller may be dispensed with and the grippers may draw forward the strip to the required extent over a gumming-roller, which is momentarily raised to gum a short length of the strip.
