28,111. Walsh, G. I. Dec. 19. Type - writers. - Cipher or code messages are composed and transposed by the aid of a type-writer with interchangeable keys c, Fig. 3, or key caps c, Fig. 8. The signs proper to the key levers are marked adjacently on the base or some other part of the type-writer. The key c, Fig. 3, is formed with a stem or shank c1 and the key lever b is formed with a corresponding socket b1 having an internal rib for engagement in a groove in the shank c1. The shank may be formed on the key lever, and the socket on the key. The cap c, Fig. 8, is formed with an annular bead c2 and vertical slits c3, and is sprung upon an ordinary key b1. In order to prevent accidental disclosure of the code, the machine is provided with a case or cover d, Fig. 13, having a hinged front d1 with an inclined plate e for contact with the front row of keys or caps, so that closure is impossible until these keys or caps are removed. The front row of keys is supported at the rear by a vertical partition f, which is fixed to the top of the case, and is retained by a bead f 1 on the base a.
