Stopping engines and trains; contacts, electric ; signalling between trains; signals on engines.-A train entering a block section on a single line automatically closes an electric contact, the circuit being completed when another train enters the section from the opposite end, whereupon the brakes are applied or an alarm is sounded. A train moving from A to B, Fig. 3, displaces, by means of a rod on the engine, the levers d,f, Fig. 1, in the directions 2, 4, whereupon the insulated armaturej on the arm h is brought within reach of an energized electromagnet l, and the contact m, g is made. The circuit through the line-wire z is completed when a train entering at B depresses a similar lever f, thereby energizing the electromagnet u and causing the slot v of the lever s to hold a lever q in the vertical position. The rod upon the engine is deflected when it strikes this lever, and the brakes are thus applied or a warning signal on the engine is sounded. When an engine leaves a section, it moves the lever d so as to break the contact n, o and de-energize the locking - magnets. Three line-wires are employed.
