Telegraphs.-In a transmitter, having keys, the depression of one of which causes a series of currents to be sent in accordance with the Morse code, the pivoted bars provided with contact-faces slide on a common contact-rail during the depression of the key, but in their return motion recede from it. The contact-faces b of the bars s are separated by insulating-material a, or by recesses in the bar. Each bar is connected to its key by a lever h, to which it is pivoted, and by a link g A spring f, preferably fixed in a slot in the lever h, presses on one of the two faces at the end of the bar s. As the bar is raised, it gradually turns on its pivot until the spring presses the other face, and the bar thus recedes from the contact-rail during its return, until near its lowest position, when a stop i meets the bar, or a projection from it, and throws it back to its original position. A commutating-device may be employed as in type-writers, to enable each key to produce several different signs ; for instance, each bar may have several sets of contact-pieces, arranged side by side or one above the other, and brought into action by shifting the rail longitudinally or vertically.
