Displaying and storing.-A wooden cabinet or apparatus shown in section in Fig. 2, is adapted for conditioning, storing, and displaying tobacco, and can be modified for storing and preserving perishable articles. In the bottom of the cabinet is placed one or more drawers b lined with zinc or other impervious tanks c, which serve to hold the water, or solution, used to maintain the air in the cabinet in a moist condition. Above the drawers are placed removable fluted or channelled grids d of glazed porcelain, pottery, wood, or other material which is not readily contaminated. The back e and lid f may open, or the lid may be fixed and used as a counter, the front of the cabinet being glazed. The cabinet may be divided into compartments, the partitions being perforated to ensure good ventilation. Ventilating-passages l are provided in the outer walls, the size of the openings being regulated by swivelling plates n. Fig. 4 shows a form of earthenware jar suitable for storing loose tobacco in the cabinet. Apertures h' are so shaped that they allow free circulation of the air, and yet prevent the tobacco from working out. The bottom of the jar consists of a piece of woven fabric or other porous material i stretched on a frame i1 placed in an aperture h2. The jar stands on an open mat M consisting of two layers of thin wooden slats spaced apart and connected together. For storing and preserving edibles and other perishable articles, the cabinet is made larger and provided in its upper part with spray-apparatus. The tanks c, which may contain water or ice, are made deeper, and fitted with overflow or outlet pipes. The articles are exposed to a spray of water, grids similar to those shown at d, or shelves being used to sup. port them. The wooden casing may be modified or dispensed with, and the shop window may be used as a glazed front.
