14,183. Vecchi, G., Conti-. June 23. Wood, preserving; sleepers.-Railway sleepers are impregnated with antiseptic and like substances or liquids in a series of equal tanks, into which they are lifted by bars 57 jointed at 57a and in which they are held down by bars 59, the tanks being connected with each other by pipes and having floats 67 and movable covers, which are provided with outlets 25 and are connected to each other by tubes 29. The moisture is driven from the wood in the tank 2 by immersion in the liquid at atmospheric pressure and above 100‹ C., the temperature being retained by circulation through a re-heater 13 by a pump 16. The steam heats the liquid in the tank 1, and any uncondensed escapes through a tube 72, the condensation water passing through a tube 62. When the tank 2 has been dehydrated, the hot liquid is run into the tank 1 by the valve 38, and the cold antiseptic, which may be creosote oil, is run in by the pump 15 from the reservoir 11. The temperature should be under 100‹ C. and the pressure not less than one atmosphere. The liquid is run into the trough 14 through the valve 31, and is pumped back to the reservoirs by a pump 17, and a saline solution fiom the vessel 12 is then run in and is afterwards returned by the pump 15. An emulsion of the two liquids may be used. These operations are performed in the same tank successively, but simultaneously in all the tanks, and the number of dehydration and injection tanks may be increased as required.
