Buffers.-Relates to improvements in the selfcontained spring buffers described in Specification No. 22,105, A.D. 1904, and used in converting deadbuffered into spring-buffered wagons. The buffer guide may be made in two parts out of sheet steel, riveted together and fitted with a steel cap D, Fig. 1, as described in Specification No. 15,791, A.D. 1896. The sole-bar is cut level or nearly so with the headstock, packing, as shown in Fig. 1B1, being introduced in the latter case, and the buffer guide is fitted with a flange G, Fig. 1, whereby it is bolted to the back-plate H. The plate H is formed with lugs H1 and a side lug or lugs P, Fig. 1B1, by means of which it is bolted to the sole-bar and headstock by bolts M, M' and strap bolts M2. The spring J, Fig. 1, is compressed by the buffer head F on impact of the vehicles, the head being prevented from slipping out of the buffer guide by a cottar K. The corner of the wagon is strengthened by a knee R, Fig. 1B1. The chamber A may be cast whole and secured to the back-plate H, Fig. 2, a retaining-plate V fitting into a recess T between the plate H and the chamber A, or the lugs H, P, Fig. 3, can be cast along with the case, a recess T, Fig. 3, being formed to accommodate the loose retaining-plate V, which may be turned inwards as shown at V1, Fig. 4. The side securing-lug P may be strengthened by brackets B cast with the Luffer chamber, the buffer guide may be used in connection with the buffer head, as described in Specification No. 22,105, A.D. 1904, the springs for absorbing shocks being mounted upon an extended portion of the buffer plunger. With the improved buffer, the members of the underframe can be removed without necessitating any alteration to the buffers and buffing-gear.
