1691. Bell, F. J. Jan. 27. G u a r d s. - A safety device for use with mangling, wringing, ironing, calendering, carding, and similar machines comprises a board, which, when moved by contact with the operator's hand, severs a string, thus causing the release of a weight or spring which actuates a clutch or belt - fork. The chain j2 supporting the weight h on the rod is held by a pivoted lever l which is connected by means of the cord m with the fixed extension l1 of the rod j. The board o, extending the length of the rollers, when moved, causes the knife blade r to sever the string m, thus releasing the lever l and permitting the fall of the weight to actuate the clutch c through the medium of levers. A spring k prevents excessive concussion, the weight being hollowed out to receive it. In a modification, a spring is released by the cutting of the string, and the consequent movement of a slotted plate shifts the belt-fork. A slack chain connecting the chain j2 with the clutch or fork may also be employed instead of the levers.
