Points and switches; electric railways and tramways.-Relates to means for controlling and operating, from the vehicles, the rail and conductor points of electric railways and tramways having overhead conductors, and consists in improvements on the means described in Specification No. 26,124, A.D. 1903, and No. 11,393, A.D. 1902. The ordinary section insulators have, near the points, insulated distance-pieces so that, when the trolly pulley is in contact with it, a circuit is completed through the electro-magnet B contained in the street box A. This causes the iron core C to be drawn downwards and, through the three-armed lever E, to operate the conductor and rail points. The lever E is locked in its depressed position by the spring-controlled lever Y, the lower end of which engages the catch Z on the lever E. When the vehicle has passed the points, the collector engages another insulated distance-piece and thus energizes the electro-magnet U, which operates the lever Y and allows the points to return to their normal position under the action of the spring F. The points can be operated and unlocked by hand by means of the levers R, I respectively. When it is not desired to operate the points, the motorman moves the motor-controller handle to the ' off ' position and coasts over the insulated distancepiece.
