Improvements in the Purification of Gases produced in the Destructive Distillation of Coal or other Carbonaceous Material and Apparatus therefor.

2907. Wilton, G. Feb. 6. Purifying gas.-Coal-gas is led direct from the retorts into one or more washers supplied with a cooled circulation of gas liquor, in order to dispense with the usual condensing-plant. For this purpose, the hydraulic main is connected by a pipe 1 with a scrubber 2, of the kind described in Specification No. 24,832, A.D. 1901, [Abridgment Class Distilling &c.], and a supply of gas liquor is continuously circulated through the scrubber, and a tubular cooler 6, by means of a pump 5. Any excess of liquor, together with tarry matters, may be run off through a pipe 7. After leaving the gas - liquor scrubbers, gas may be further treated with water, or sulphurous acid ; or sulphur dioxide may be admitted to the gas-liquor scrubbers. In a modified arrangement of apparatus, the above process may be combined with that described in Specification No. 25,275, A.D. 1905, for preventing the deposit of heavy tars in hydraulic mains. A thick tar separator is interposed in the gas-main 1 and connected with a second tubular cooler, and a second pump is provided to circulate gas liquor from a tank through this cooler, the hydraulic main, gas-main, and tar separator. The liquor which accumulates in the separator may be used in the scrubbers, suitable connexion being provided for this purpose.
