5001. Bentley, H. March 1. Single-acting compound engines; valves and valvegear.-A single-acting, tandem, compound engine using superheated steam consists of a number of pairs of cylinders. The pistons A, D drive opposite cranks E, the steam from one high-pressure cylinder passing to the adjoining low-pressure cylinder. The adjustable valve-actuating rods O carry cotters V working in slots in the bushes S to prevent them from rotating. The casing V1 has saw-cuts W, which enable the bushes S to be secured.
