402. Drewell, H. Jan. 7. Typewriters etc.; type, setting.-A strip perforator for preparing control strips for type-setting machines is combined with a typewriter having differential letter-spacing mechanism, thus depensing with the space indicator or letter counter required with a typewriter' having uniform letter-spacing mechanism. The key-levers 14 actuate the typebars 17 through connexions 15, 16 and select the spacing of the typewriter and the punches of the perforator by means of pairs of lugs 20 co-operating with U-shaped levers 21, 28 termed combination rails. The carriage escapement mechanism and provided with a stop-plate 12 normally resting against a fixed stop 27. The pawl 9 is on a lever 22 actuated by one of the rails 21 engaged by all the key-levers 14. The lever 22 is also provided with a bar 24 for releasing the pawl 8. When the pawl 8 is released, the sleeve 10 is swung round by means of a spring 25 until the plate 12 is arrested by a stop 26, projected by one of the levers 23 actuated by the other rails 21. consists of a ratchet-wheel 5, Figs. 1 and 2, a normally-engaged movable spring pawl 8, and a normally-free fixed pawl 9. The pawl 8 is pivoted on a sleeve 10, loose on the escapement shaft 4 The rails 28 determine the selection of the punches by drawing down interponents 32 between the punches 33 and the striking-bar 34. The interponents 32 are carried on draw rods 30 connected by arms 29 to the rails 28. The striking- bar 34 is carried by a lever 35 actuated by an electro-magnet 37, which is energized by contact of the arms 29 with an insulated rail 28. The lever 35 also actuates the paper feed 42.
