1565. Tamamura, Y. Jan. 21. Rope grips, operated by the weight of the load, are constructed with differential jaw-levers adapted to move through unequal angles for an equal vertical displacement of their ends. In Fig. 2, the apparatus is shown suspended by a lever 3 from the carrying-wheel, the lower end of the lever being pivoted at 4 to two unequal levers 5, 6. The outer end of the lever 5 is pivoted at 11 to a pin 10 bossed in the head of a load-supporting lever 14, and the free end of the lever 6 is pivoted to a pin 8, which is free to move longitudinally in its boss in the lever 14. A wheel 13 is mounted on the end of the pin 10, and a pair of wheels 12 is mounted on a T-piece rigidly fixed to the sliding pin 8. These wheels are adapted to engage uncoupling-rails 15, 16 at stations, for the purpose of relieving the clip members of the weight of the load and allowing the jaws to open. Fig. 4 shows a modification, in which the hanger 3 is flexibly connected to the lever ends, the load lever being pivoted at the clip pin. In this case only one uncoupling-rait is necessary, to engage a pair of wheels 12 journaled on extensions of the clip pin. Figs. 5 and 6 show a modification for use where there is no track or track rope. A supporting-ring 20 is journaled on an axle 19 passing through the head of the member 14. To this ring is pivoted the short lever 6, the other lever 5 being connected to a sliding pin 10; a handle 21 is provided to twist the clip. A bracket 22, carrying the wheels 12, is also mounted on the axle 19, but is only free to rotate in one direction, and is normally kept perpendicular to the grip jaw by a spring between the arm 17, carried by the bracket, and the handle 21. This arrangement allows the grip to be turned to suit the inclination of the rope while the load is supported on the uncoupling-rail 15.
