6087. Frith, G. R. H. March 13. Motor road vehicles.-A steam turbine is arranged in an automobile to drive directly through a clutch, Cardan shaft, and suitable gearing designed to effect a reverse. A turbine a carried beneath the car bonnet is supplied with steam through a pipe a' from a flash boiler of known type, the exhaust being conveyed to the radiator and water container by means ot a pipe a1. The turbine shaft b is connected to the Cardan shaft d by means of a friction clutch. The driving-pinion engages either of two bevel-wheels h formed on the back of a casing g1, which has on its inside grooves g to enable it to slide on the differential gear case f1, which has lugs engaging the grooves in the casing g1. The differential casing is extended to form a sleeve f3 the end of which is flanged at j ; between this flange and a similar sleeve extension of the casing g', a spring k is arranged to retain one of the bevel-wheels in mesh with the pinion i by means of which a forward drive is given. Two spring catches l, carried by the casing f engage the casing g1 and prevent the disengagement of the bevel-wheel and pinion. To reverse, the spring catches l are disengaged by the contraction of a band (not shown), and the casing g1 is moved by a striking gear m operated by the lever m1 against the action of the spring k.
