Bleaching; conditioning wheat &c.-Wheat and other grain is washed in the ordinary manner and is then placed while damp in a silo and allowed to remain until the moisture has sufficiently penetrated the outer coverings. It is afterwards subjected to a dry heat at about 100‹ F., or live steam may be used, precautions being taken to prevent excessive damping. One form of apparatus consists of a jacketed cylinder in which works a revolving worm, the temperature being regulated by a steam-inlet valve. The grain then passes to a second silo where it remains for a time varying according to the hardness of the grain and the amount of moisture it contains. The grain is easy to grind and gives large bran and white semolina and flour.
